Founded in Nuremberg in 1977 by Dr Bernd Rödl, our firm was one of the first in Europe to combine the expertise of attorneys, tax consultants and statutory auditors in a single team.

In 1989, immediately after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Rödl & Partner took its first steps towards internationalisation by expanding into eastern Germany and opening its first offices in Prague, Budapest and Warsaw in 1990 and 1991.

Rödl & Partner kept growing eastward and was the first international law and tax firm to set up offices in the post-communist countries. In the 1990s, offices opened in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius, Bratislava, Bucharest, Ljubljana, Zagreb, Chisinau and Minsk. In Poland alone, the firm has six offices.

In 1994, Rödl & Partner was the first non-Chinese firm to obtain a licence to provide legal and tax consulting services in the Republic of China. In China, Rödl & Partner is represented in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Beijing and Guangzhou. With offices in Singapore and Jakarta, the company also has a strong presence in Southeast Asia.

At the end of the 1990s, Rödl & Partner set its sights on the southwest and opened offices in Spain, Italy and, after crossing the Atlantic, in the United States of America. The expansion has continued unabated to this day: offices are now located in France, Brazil, Switzerland, Dubai, India, Thailand, Vietnam, South Africa and, since 2008, also in the United Kingdom.

This international success was accompanied by rapid establishment in Italy, a strategic country in the Rödl universe. The first office was opened in Milan in 1998, followed by Padua, Rome and Bolzano in the 2000s, with a total of over 250 employees.​
