Leaked photos of the Latvian Prime Minister reaffirms the necessity to ensure data safety

On  December 1, 2020, the Data State Inspectorate of Latvia started investigation regarding leaked photos of the Prime Minister of Latvia shopping at a grocery store and not wearing a mask as required by COVID-19 prevention rules. The photos were circulated in social media and attracted a considerable public interest. The photos appear to be originated from a closed-circuit television (CCTV) which is usually present in grocery stores. Later on it was revealed that photos were actually taken in July of this year when wearing a mask was not obligatory in Latvia.

The Spanish Supreme Court extends the right to erasure

The Spanish Supreme Court has recently given an opinion on data protection rights. Particularly, recognized the right to erasure (former “right be forgotten”) about internet searches carried out with just the two surnames of the person concerned if the information related to the data subject undermines the right to honor, privacy or self-image, provided that the information is not of public interest and can be considered obsolete.

Big Tech beloved one-stop shop mechanism to the test after recent Twitter decision

On 9 December 2020, the Irish Data Protection Commissioner fined Twitter for 450.000 euros for failing to handle a data breach adequately. The fine was applied after a round of objections by other European National Authorities to the first Draft of decision required the EDPB to issue a binding opinion according to GDPR. The final verdict? It appears still too lenient to some.

What does the sanction to Vodafone by the Italian Data Protection Authority tell us?

On last 12 November, the Italian Data Protection Authority imposed a measure on Vodafone Italia S.p.A in the amount of more than 12.250.000.  The measure is the result of an investigation initiated by the Authority following hundreds of complaints from users relating continuous unwanted promotional telephone contacts by Vodafone and its sales network. Based on this decision, companies shall keep in mind a few staple compliance measures.
